Kazimierz was a town separate from Kraków, founded in 1335, and the Jewish quarter grew there from the fifteenth century. It had seven synagogues, including the Old Synagogue, the oldest in Poland.
The community was annihilated in the Shoah, and the quarter lay derelict into the 1990s — it is where Spielberg filmed Schindler's List. It then refilled with bars, galleries and restaurants set up in the courtyards and old workshops, without the façades being redone.
Getting there
South of the old town, fifteen minutes on foot from the Rynek. Tram 3 or 24 to Miodowa.
Rules on site
The synagogues close on Saturday and on Jewish holidays; men must cover their heads. Schindler's factory, across the Vistula, must be booked ahead and cannot be added on the spur of the moment.
