The island was laid out as a museum quarter from 1830, by decision of Frederick William III, and it holds five — Pergamon, Bode, Neues, Altes and the Old National Gallery. It was eighty per cent destroyed in the war, and the rebuilding is only now finishing.
Two pieces dominate: the bust of Nefertiti at the Neues Museum, found at Amarna in 1912 and claimed by Egypt ever since; and Babylon's Ishtar Gate, reassembled at full size in the Pergamon. Note the latter: it is being renovated in stages into the mid-2030s.
Getting there
S-Bahn to Hackescher Markt or U-Bahn to Museumsinsel, five minutes on foot. A combined ticket covers all five museums for a day.
What the price covers
the Museumsinsel ticket, valid one day for every exhibition on the museum island. The standard discount is 50%, for schoolchildren, apprentices and students.
Rules on site
The Pergamon is closed in stages for a renovation running into the mid-2030s: check what is open before coming for it. Photographing Nefertiti is forbidden, and it is enforced.
