The Harder Kulm rises one thousand three hundred and twenty-two metres directly above Interlaken. A funicular has climbed it since 1908, at gradients reaching sixty-four per cent — among the steepest in Switzerland.
At the top, a steel platform juts out over the drop. The point of the place is that it explains the site: Interlaken is built on an alluvial fan between two lakes — Thun and Brienz — which were one lake until the torrents cut it in two. You see both in one glance, with the Eiger, the Mönch and the Jungfrau opposite.
Getting there
Base station five minutes on foot from Interlaken Ost station. The funicular climbs in ten minutes.
