The Fjellheisen cable car climbs in four minutes to Mount Storsteinen, four hundred and twenty-one metres above the Tromsøysundet. It has run since 1961 and the cabins are called Seal and Polar Bear.
From the top the geography makes sense: Tromsø is on an island, wedged between the mainland and Kvaløya, with the snow-covered Lyngen Alps to the east. In summer the midnight sun never sets and the cable car runs all night; in winter it is an aurora viewing point reachable without a car.
Getting there
Solliveien 12 in Tromsdalen, across the bridge. Bus 26 from the centre, or twenty-five minutes on foot over the bridge.
What the price covers
paid cable car, rate to be confirmed; the Sherpatrappa path is free
What to bring
- Walking shoes
- Windbreaker
Rules on site
The cable car closes in high wind, which happens often in winter: check the running status on the day. It is far colder and windier at the top than below.
