Dune 7 owes its prosaic name to its position: it is the seventh dune you meet going up from the road. It reaches around a hundred and thirty metres, making it one of the highest in Namibia.
It is ten minutes from Swakopmund, which explains how busy it is: it is the Sunday dune, with picnic tables at the foot. The climb takes about twenty minutes in soft sand where you slide back one step in two, and the way down is done at a run or on a sandboard.
Getting there
Ten minutes' drive from Walvis Bay and twenty from Swakopmund, signposted from the main road.
What to bring
- Walking shoes
Rules on site
The sand reaches sixty degrees in the middle of the day: closed shoes, and no climbing between eleven and four in summer. The afternoon wind drives the sand — sunglasses help.
