Djerbahood began in 2014: a Paris gallery invited a hundred and fifty artists from thirty countries to paint the walls of Erriadh, a lived-in Djerban village several centuries old. The project has grown since and now holds over two hundred and fifty murals.
The agreement with residents was explicit: each owner gave or refused their wall, and many refused. So you walk through an ordinary village where some frontages are painted and others are not — which is exactly what separates the place from a theme park.
Getting there
In Erriadh village, seven kilometres south of Houmt Souk, next to the Ghriba synagogue.
Rules on site
This is a lived-in village: push no doors, and do not photograph interiors or residents without asking. Some murals have faded or been painted over since they were made.
