The point is a mesa joined to the plateau by an isthmus only thirty metres wide. The name comes from a nineteenth-century practice: cowboys used it as a natural corral for wild horses by fencing the neck — and legend has it a herd was forgotten there and died of thirst within sight of the Colorado, six hundred metres below.
The view takes in a horseshoe bend of the Colorado and the neighbouring potash evaporation ponds, dyed bright blue as part of the process. It is a state park, separate from the national parks, with its own ticket.
