Cape Byron is the easternmost point of the Australian mainland, and the 1901 lighthouse stands on the tip: its Fresnel lens is one of the most powerful in the country.
The path up from Wategos follows the cliff and passes a lookout above the water. Dolphins are visible almost every day, and from June to November humpback whales pass offshore on migration — the cape is one of the best land-based watching points in Australia.
Getting there
Three kilometres east of Byron Bay town. The coastal path from Main Beach climbs in an hour; the lighthouse car park is paid and small.
What to bring
- Walking shoes
Rules on site
The summit car park is tiny and full long before sunrise: walk up. The path is narrow, stepped, and packed at sunrise and sunset.
