Angkor was the capital of the Khmer empire from the ninth to the fifteenth century, and one of the largest pre-industrial settlements in the world: lidar surveys suggest up to seven hundred thousand people over an area the size of Los Angeles.
Angkor Wat, the best preserved, faces west — the reverse of Khmer practice — which has fed the theory that it is a funerary temple. The Bayon carries two hundred stone faces on fifty-four towers. Ta Prohm was deliberately left under the strangler figs, whose roots now hold up the walls they pulled apart.
