The Alpe di Siusi, or Seiser Alm, is the largest high-altitude meadow in Europe: fifty-six square kilometres of rolling pasture between eighteen hundred and twenty-three hundred metres, with the Sassolungo and the Sciliar standing at the end of it.
It is a working alp, not a park: the cattle come up in summer and the scattered wooden barns are still in use. The access road is closed to private traffic during the day, which is why the plateau stays quiet — you go up by cable car from Siusi.
Getting there
Cable car from Siusi allo Sciliar, twenty minutes from Bolzano by bus. The plateau road is closed to cars from nine to five.
What the price covers
the plateau is free to walk; the cable car from Ortisei is ticketed
Rules on site
The road is closed to private vehicles during the day: the cable car is the only option, and it stops in the late afternoon. Check the last departure before walking far across the plateau.
