Why Saint Lucia
The island is forty-three kilometres long and its relief is that of a volcano: steep, green, covered in rainforest. The Pitons — Gros Piton and Petit Piton — are World Heritage listed and rise from the sea to seven hundred and seventy metres near Soufrière. That is the island's silhouette.
Castries, in the north, is the capital and the cruise port. Rodney Bay holds the hotels and the marina. Soufrière, in the south-west, is the scenic heart, with the sulphur springs and the botanical gardens.
December to April: dry and hot. June to November brings the rainy season and the hurricane season.
Entry and stay
Requirements depend on nationality. Check yours with the local authorities before booking.
No duration is quoted here, for want of an official source verified at the time of writing — 22 September 2026.
Getting around
Private minibuses serve the island on fixed routes, cheaply, with no posted timetable. They stop on request.
A car requires a temporary local permit, issued with the rental. Driving is on the left, and the southern roads are narrow, very steep and winding — the Castries–Soufrière crossing takes far longer than the distance suggests.
The water taxi between Castries, Marigot Bay and Soufrière avoids that road and gives the best view of the Pitons.
Money
The East Caribbean dollar, pegged to the US dollar. US dollars are widely accepted, with change given in East Caribbean dollars.
Cards work in hotels and restaurants; minibuses and markets stay in cash.
Health
No vaccination required from Europe. Dengue circulates in the region.
The main hospital is in Castries. Insurance covering evacuation is advisable, as everywhere in the Lesser Antilles.
Before you go
Climbing Gros Piton must be guided and starts from Fond Gens Libre. It is not a stroll: two hours of steep ascent.
Soufrière's "drive-in volcano" is a collapsed caldera with sulphur springs, not an active crater. The mud baths that go with it are a local custom as much as an attraction.
The island lives largely on cruise calls: on call days, Castries and Soufrière change density entirely. The schedule is public.
