Why Honduras
The country reads in three blocks with almost nothing in common. The Bay Islands — Roatán, Utila, Guanaja — sit on the world's second largest barrier reef and draw divers; Utila is one of the cheapest places on earth to qualify. Copán, in the west, is a World Heritage Mayan site, known for its carved stelae rather than its size. The interior, mountainous, holds Tegucigalpa and the cloud forests of La Tigra and Celaque.
The Caribbean coast is hot and humid all year; the interior, at altitude, is temperate.
February to April for diving and dry weather. June to November brings rain and hurricane season on the north coast.
Entry and stay
Requirements depend on nationality. Check yours with the local authorities before booking.
No duration is quoted here, for want of an official source verified at the time of writing — 22 September 2026.
Honduras belongs to the CA-4 with Guatemala, El Salvador and Nicaragua: permitted stay is counted across all four countries, and moving from one to another does not reset the clock.
Getting around
Direct coaches link San Pedro Sula, Tegucigalpa and Copán; the better operators are worth the supplement on these routes.
Roatán and Utila are reached by ferry from La Ceiba, one to two hours depending on the island, on crossings with a reputation for being rough. Roatán also has an international airport.
A car is useful for Copán and the interior. Travelling at night is advised against.
Money
The lempira. US dollars circulate on the Bay Islands.
Cash dominates; cash machines are present in the towns and on Roatán, scarcer on Utila.
Health
No vaccination required from Europe. Malaria and dengue exist in the lowlands and along the coast.
Serious medical facilities are limited. On an island the question is evacuation, and insurance covering it is essential — all the more so since diving adds its own risk and the nearest hyperbaric chamber is not always on site.
Before you go
Honduras has some of the worst security indicators in the region, concentrated in certain urban areas. The Bay Islands and Copán do not present the same profile as San Pedro Sula or Tegucigalpa. Official advisories should be consulted before building an itinerary.
Utila and Roatán are two different economies: Utila is backpacker and cheap, Roatán takes cruise ships and costs several times more.
Copán is an hour from the Guatemalan border: many travellers come to it from Antigua rather than from within Honduras.
