Europe

Le vélo comme infrastructure, la TVA la plus lourde d'Europe, et des ports où l'on se baigne.

Why Denmark

The country is flat, maritime and scattered across nearly five hundred islands, about a hundred of them inhabited. Copenhagen is on Zealand, Jutland is the mainland part attached to Germany, and the Øresund bridge links the capital to Malmö in Sweden in about twenty minutes.

Light governs the year. In June it does not really get dark; in December daylight lasts seven hours. That is not an anecdote: it changes what a day can hold.

May to September for mild weather and long evenings. Winter is grey, windy and damp rather than very cold, and it is the season of hygge — which is a domestic reality before it is a sales pitch.

Entry and stay

An EU and Schengen country. An identity card is enough for nationals of the EU, the European Economic Area and Switzerland.

For other nationalities, the European Entry/Exit System (EES) has been in service since 10 April 2026 and digitally records every crossing of a Schengen external border, with or without a visa, against the ninety-days-in-a-hundred-eighty allowance. ETIAS, a twenty-euro authorisation for visa-exempt nationalities, is expected in the final quarter of 2026.

Getting around

DSB trains link Copenhagen to Aarhus and Jutland; the network is dense and punctual. The Øresund bridge puts Malmö twenty minutes away, which makes a day trip to Sweden unremarkable from the capital.

Copenhagen is lived by bicycle, and not symbolically: the lanes are wide, separated and given priority, and there are more bikes than residents. The rules are enforced — lights, hand signals, compulsory lamps at night.

The islands are linked by ferries, numerous and reliable.

Money

The Danish krone, not the euro. This is the most common mistake: Denmark is in the European Union but has kept its own currency.

On the other hand it is one of the most cashless countries in Europe: cards work absolutely everywhere, including for a coffee, and many businesses no longer take cash at all. Withdrawing kroner is often unnecessary.

Tipping is not expected, service being included.

Before you go

This is an expensive country, for food as for transport and going out. The discount supermarket and the lunchtime meal close part of the gap; dinner out does not.

The bridges between Denmark and Sweden, and between the Danish islands, are tolled and expensive by car. The train is often cheaper than driving on those routes.

Darkness falls around four in December and outdoor sites close accordingly. A winter trip is built around indoor things.
