In short
Mérida regularly ranks among the safest cities in the Americas, which explains the community of long-term residents living here year-round.
The Yucatán arranges itself around it: Chichén Itzá and Uxmal less than two hours away, dozens of cenotes, and the Gulf coast thirty minutes off.
What it really costs
Housing costs half of Playa del Carmen or Tulum, a hundred kilometres away. That is the trade-off made by people who want the Yucatán without the Caribbean coast.
Markets and cocinas económicas serve a full meal for two or three euros. The food budget looks nothing like the Riviera Maya.
What nobody tells you
It is very hot and very humid from April to September, with peaks beyond forty degrees in May. The city empties in the middle of the day and life resumes in the evening.
Hurricane season runs from June to November. Mérida is inland and so little exposed to wind, but the rain and road closures are real.
The colonial centre is superb and small. The rest of the city is spread out and covered by car or taxi: without either, you circle ten streets.
