In short
Haleakalā rises to three thousand and fifty-five metres. You drive up from sea level in two hours, which makes it one of the fastest ascents by road in the world.
The road to Hana, six hundred bends and fifty-nine bridges over eighty kilometres, follows the east coast and takes a full day.
What it really costs
Maui is dearer than Oahu for accommodation and there is no useful public transport: a car is compulsory and is the second budget item.
Groceries at the Kahului supermarket cost markedly less than in the tourist areas of the west and south.
What nobody tells you
Sunrise at the summit of Haleakalā requires a compulsory online booking, opening sixty days ahead and gone quickly. Without it, access is refused between three and seven in the morning.
The August 2023 fires destroyed Lahaina and killed many people. The town is rebuilding, access to some areas remains restricted, and the subject is handled with restraint on the island.
The Hana road is done early and clockwise: setting off after nine means driving it in a queue.
