In short

Manchester is the world's first industrial city, and the Science and Industry Museum, housed in the oldest surviving passenger railway station, tells that story free of charge.

Its music scene has produced a disproportionate share of what England has exported since the sixties. Gig venues remain the city's most ordinary night out.

What it really costs

Manchester is the main English city outside London for skilled work, at half the London cost of housing. That is the trade-off people make when they move here.

National and municipal museums are free, as everywhere in the UK: the Whitworth, Manchester Art Gallery and the science museum ask nothing.

What nobody tells you

Since 2025 French visitors need an electronic authorisation and a passport. The ID card is no longer enough, and it is what stops the most departures.

The train to London takes two hours but costs anything within a tenfold range: booked twelve weeks ahead it is a third of the coach; bought the day before it costs more than a flight.

It rains roughly one day in three, spread across the year. That is not local exaggeration, it is the statistic.

Visa

Short stay

Electronic travel authorisation — ETA — compulsory for French citizens since 2025, applied for online. A passport has replaced the ID card.

Long stay

Employer-sponsored work visa, with a salary threshold. Free movement ended with Brexit.
