Climb after eight in the evening or before seven in the morning: the lit gates, with nobody there, are another experience altogether. The summit takes two hours return, and the crowd disappears after the first quarter of an hour.

Kinkaku-ji, Ryoan-ji and Ninna-ji sit on the same road, a few minutes apart by bus: three temples in one morning for a single trip out from the station. The ticket is a printed paper charm — keep it.

In spring and autumn the temple reopens in the evening for the illuminations, until around 9.30 p.m., on a separate ticket: that is the only other window where the terrace is worth the trip. The rest of the year it is six in the morning or nothing.
