In short

Hanoi does not give itself away easily. Constant traffic, occupied pavements, permanent noise. Then you find your café, your lane, your market, and it becomes the most endearing city in the region.

Tay Ho, around West Lake, holds the expatriates and the comfortable housing.

What it really costs

One of the best comfort-to-price ratios in Asia. A modern apartment with a lift stays below the price of a room in Singapore.

Street food is excellent and costs a few euros a day. Western restaurants are expensive for what they offer.

When to go

October and November are the best months: dry, mild, bright. March and April work too.

Winter is damp and cold, with no heating in most homes. Summer is stifling.

What nobody tells you

Air quality is poor for several months a year, at levels that justify an air purifier at home.

Crossing the street is a skill: you move slowly and steadily, and the scooters flow around you. Stopping in the middle is the one dangerous mistake.

Visa

Short stay

Short exemption for French citizens, e-visa beyond that.

Long stay

Business visa sponsored by a local company.

  • Hoan Kiem Lake and Ngoc Son temple

    must-seeFree

The lake at the heart of the old town, its legendary turtle and the red bridge to the temple.

At weekends the surrounding streets close to cars from Friday evening to Sunday evening: that is the best time to walk.

the banks and the bridge are free; only the temple on the islet asks a small entry fee, to be checked on site.

  • The 36 streets of the old quarter

    must-seeFree

One street per guild since the fifteenth century: tin street, silk street, toy street.

Sit on a plastic stool for bia hoi, the day's draught beer: a few thousand dong a glass, and that is where the city tells its own story.

    open quarter, free access

  • Temple of Literature

    must-seePrice unconfirmed

Vietnam's first university, founded in 1070, and its stelae carried on stone tortoises.

Most people stop at the turtle stelae and leave. The building at the far end, in the fifth courtyard, has an open upper floor with the Confucius statue and a view back over all the courtyards — it is on the same ticket.

entry charged, rate to be confirmed on site
