In short

Arthur's Seat, the high point of Holyrood Park, is an extinct volcano of two hundred and fifty metres you can climb in forty minutes from the centre. The view beats any paid viewpoint in the city.

Scotland's national museums are free, as in England: the National Museum of Scotland and the National Gallery ask nothing at the door.

What it really costs

Outside August, Edinburgh stays more affordable than London without being cheap. Housing takes half the budget.

The castle is paid and dear, while the old town, the Royal Mile, Calton Hill and Arthur's Seat are free. A good week can be built around a single paid ticket.

What nobody tells you

In August the Fringe doubles the city's population. Accommodation triples in price and is booked six months ahead. Coming in August is a choice, not a scheduling accident.

Since 2025 French visitors need an electronic authorisation and a passport: the ID card is no longer enough. It is what stops the most last-minute departures.

The weather changes several times a day and the wind makes an umbrella useless. A light waterproof layer does all the work.

Visa

Short stay

Electronic travel authorisation — ETA — compulsory for French citizens since 2025, applied for online. A passport has replaced the ID card.

Long stay

Employer-sponsored work visa, with a salary threshold. Free movement ended with Brexit.

    Royal Mile and the Castle

    must-seeFree

A sloping street between a castle on a volcano and a palace, with a closed lane at every step.

The one o'clock gun is fired from the castle every day except Sunday and is heard across the city: stand on Princes Street to see it without paying admission. It has kept time since 1861.

the street is free; Edinburgh Castle and Holyrood Palace are charged separately

    Arthur's Seat

    must-seeFree

An extinct volcano of two hundred and fifty metres, twenty minutes from the centre, with the city below.

Go up by the Dunsapie path on the east side: it is the shortest and least steep, and you come down over Salisbury Crags on the city side to have the view in front of you on the way back.
