In short
Corfu was Venetian for four hundred years and was never taken by the Ottomans. It shows: its old town, a World Heritage site, looks more like Italy than like the rest of Greece.
It is the greenest island in Greece. Three million olive trees planted under the Venetians cover the interior, and it rains enough to keep them.
What it really costs
Prices are comparable to Rhodes and well below the Cyclades. The west coast, more dramatic, costs more than the east.
The green bus links the villages from Corfu Town for a few euros, better than on most islands. A car is still useful but not essential.
What nobody tells you
This is one of the rainiest islands in Greece, especially from October to March. What makes its greenery also makes its grey winters, and a great deal closes out of season.
The north-east, around Kassiopi, has been the most expensive part of the island for decades. The south stays popular and affordable.
Corfu Town is a cruise stop: when two ships berth, the old town is saturated from ten to four, then empties.
